NEED FOR WOMEN'S HOSTELS
There are more than 23,000 students that seek admission
to various under-graduate courses in Delhi Univeristy every year. Of these
there are at least 5000 out station students, whose accomodation is generally
overlooked by the varsity. There are only 1200 hostel seats for women
in undergraduate courses in DU. Each year more and more women are stranded
in Delhi without accommodation. Where will they stay if the existing colleges
do not have adequate hostel accomodation?
There are many 'paying guest' type accomodations that have
mushroomed all over the city, but these generally lack quality and security
and there have been cases where girls were even harrassed.
The need for accomodation extends beyond just students.
There is a very large number of girls that come from all over the country
and even abroad to work in Delhi and its surrounding areas. It is very
hard for these single women to find a safe and decent place to stay.
So there is a very significant need for professionally run,
hygienic and secure hostels for working women and students to stay. With
this in mind, the Chintels group decided to create a women's hostel dedicated
to the memory of Nora E. Solomon for whom the safety and welfare of women
was paramount.
